I wonder if part of this is that the names of units from Warhammer 40K (and similar) come across as more cool than 1st Company 10th Infantry etc. E.g. Wolf Company of the 10th Pride sounds way cooler.
It’s where the Brits named Regiments, Balckwatch for example, just cooler than the majority of unit names around the world. 8th Combat Engineer Regiment Australian Army really isn’t as sexy.
What’s funny is I wrote my Master’s Thesis about how WH40k was influenced by various aspects of history and how, despite the grim darkness of the game, 99.9% of the players were actually chill, kind & welcoming individuals. It kinda pisses me off that the Russians make up that 0.001%
That's very cool. I can trace my own change through the years - playing as a teen I was "blood for the blood god" but as I aged, my army choice mellowed as well. Now it's Grey Knights.
My biggest regret in middle age is not the constant aches and pains from tearing up my body in the military or the fact that body hair now apparently requires constant exfoliation or risk turning into a Silverback gorilla. No, the biggest regret is that I no longer have time for this hobby.
Thank you sir. Ah that’s very cool-I got sucked in by the Black Library, more than anything else. As a result, I have spent a significant amount of money, hunting down novels (as I prefer physical copies to digital) of classic series. I really enjoy any of the novels that focus on the Inquisition. I do have a couple of friends that play Khorne or the Grey Knights, among others.
Earlier this year, when I was in Basic Training, I was one of the oldest in my flight. Some kids, who’d be like 19 or 20, would be like “Have you gotten gray hair yet” and I’d be like “No-I’m not your friggin grandpa yet”. Or I had to shave more often than others.
The blending of pop culture and the war continues to be surreal. I still remember a Donetsk propaganda video which used the soviet theme from the video game Red Alert 3, which famously got Tim Curry to play the Soviet leader.
Hehe. I don’t see any Tau symbols on the vehicles out there. Probably most combatants are mainstream race players 😏
The purity seals thing 🤦🏼♂️. My word, they truely must be desperate.
The average Russian soldier is certainly no space marine! The average Ukrainian soldier on the other hand 🤷🏼♂️

Idk… I always liked “the Guards” designation as a name. It’s not uniquely Russian through.

very interesting! thanks for the explanation and the humor. ps: vadym’s tee shirt reads “russian warship, go fuck your self” which is awesome.
